Humanitarian aid appeal to assist March 28 earthquake victims
On March 28, Burma was devastated by a catastrophic 7.7-magnitude earthquake and a 6.4-magnitude aftershock. The intensity of the two earthquakes impacted central Burma and neighboring Thailand.
Extensive damage across Burma is being reported. Millions of people are in urgent need of help, requiring support in the form of search and rescue teams; emergency medical care; safe shelter for families left homeless; clean water, food, and basic sanitation; and restoration of lifesaving essential services.
Several mosques in Sagaing, Mandalay, and Pyu have collapsed, which were filled with civilians for the last day of Ramadan. In initial reports from a partner on the ground, at least 200 were killed in the collapse of a mosque. More recent reports puts the total death toll near 3,000, about 4,565 people have been injured, and 498 people are still missing. These numbers are expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue.
To support the impacted communities during this devastating time, please donate here.
As the international community mobilizes to support the people of Burma, it is crucial that international aid reaches the people directly and not through channels controlled by the corrupt military junta. The junta has proven time and time again that they cannot be trusted to deliver aid effectively and indiscriminately. Just last year as communities grappled with the destruction of Cyclone Mocha, the junta blocked lifesaving assistance. They placed an aid suspension on Rakhine State, one of the main states impacted by the cyclone, as an act of revenge on ethnic armed groups the military had been clashing with. Millions of people were left vulnerable, without water, food, or medical help.
We urge the international community and its leaders to deliver support through independent and local actors to ensure access to the desperately needed humanitarian aid. We must prevent the junta from fueling this natural disaster into another man-made catastrophe.
Everyone’s support is greatly appreciated during this time of need. Every donation will allow partner organizations on the ground to continue supporting impacted communities and respond with emergency efforts to the devastation left behind from the earthquakes.
