While Ne Win was forced to step down from power, his cronies remained in control. Instead of negotiating with the demonstrators, they ordered their troops to shoot, killing thousands of protestors, including children, students, and women. It's estimated that up to 10,000 people were killed in a matter of months. Since no news media were allowed in the country, very few people throughout the world realized what was happening. Unlike Tiananmen Square, which resulted in fewer deaths, CNN did not have cameras inside Burma.
