A few people quickly rose to the forefront of the democracy movement--including Rangoon University student Min Ko Naing and the daughter of Burma's independence hero Aung San, named Aung San Suu Kyi. The students and others organized students, dockworkers, and even members of the military, while Aung San Suu Kyi quickly became recognized by the international community as a figurehead of the movement.
