GLOBAL DAYS OF ACTIONS FOR AUNG SAN SUU KYI’S 60TH BIRTHDAY, JUNE 19, 2005

For Immediate Release: May 31st, 2005

“We
call on individuals and governments, to support
publicly Aung San Suu Kyi on her birthday, June
19th. I support activities that call for her
immediate and unconditional release; I applaud
all human rights campaigners who are working
on her behalf, and that of her countrymen and
women. As long as she remains under arrest,
none of us is truly free.”
– South Africa’s Desmond Tutu, 1984
Nobel Peace Prize recipient

“We must act resolutely as the junta continues
to imprison those who nonviolently struggle
for freedom and justice, including Nobel laureate
and Burmese democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu
Kyi. Burma has a rising prisoner of conscience
population, with over 1,300 political prisoners.
I renew my call that Suu Kyi and other prisoners
of conscience be immediately and unconditionally
released.”
– US Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY)

“As champions of freedom and respect for human
rights, we must stand in solidarity with (Aung
San) Suu Kyi, the people of Burma, and the international
community in once again calling on the SPDC
to release Suu Kyi, relinquish power, and respect
the 1990 elections. Archbishop Desmond Tutu
has rightly said: As long as [Suu Kyi] remains
under house arrest, none of us is truly free.”

– US Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA)

“As the world’s only imprisoned Nobel Peace
Prize recipient, Aung San Suu Kyi continues
to inspire the democracy movement and seek support
for their peaceful cause. It has been reported
that the National League for Democracy has collected
more than 300,000 signatures on a petition calling
for change in the country. Those who sign are
actively putting their lives in danger by publicly
stating that they seek democratic change and
some 1,400 political prisoners are locked up
for supporting human rights and democracy.”

– US Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS)

“I want to be part of those wishing her Happy
Birthday. I have the highest regards for ASSK.
I call again on the Burmese government to let
her enjoy freedom and to recognize her role
that has been decided by the people of Burma
and they should stop their persecution of her
and the other reform minded people in Burma,
who want freedom. So I wish her Happy Birthday
and I want her to know that she is not alone,
she is not forgotten. Many people around the
world stand with her and salute her as a Great
Human Rights Champion.”
– US Congressman Joseph Pitts (R-PA)

DIGITAL BIRTHDAY WISHES AT
CANDLES FOR BURMA: www.ethicaltraveler.org/candles

Ethical
Traveler and the Burmese American Democratic
Alliance (BADA)
have launched a new
campaign to highlight the plight of democracy
advocates in Burma. The two groups are asking
supporters to send birthday wishes to opposition
leader Aung San Suu Kyi, whose 60th birthday
is June 19, 2005. Aung San Suu Kyi has been
under house arrest in Burma for most of the
past 14 years.

Ethical Traveler’s Executive Director,
Jeff Greenwald says “We have created a
website where people from around the world can
post digital greetings, offering Aung San Suu
Kyi birthday wishes and reminding her of our
support for freedom and democracy in Burma,â€
The URL for the “Candles for Burmaâ€
campaign is www.ethicaltraveler.org/candles.

“By sending a digital greeting, supporters
will be letting Aung San Suu Kyi know that people
all over the world are standing behind her.
Sometimes, that knowledge makes all the difference.â€
says Victor Win, President of BADA.
