How-to Guide for Arrest Yourself

When you sign up for Arrest Yourself, you are pledging put yourself under self-imposed house arrest, like Aung San Suu Kyi, for 24 hours. During that time, you will also host an Arrest Yourself event where you invite friends, family, and colleagues. We find that it is a great way to inform and inspire many people about Aung San Suu Kyi, her story and the story of the people of Burma under the oppressive military rule.

As soon as you sign up, we will send you a host packet full of materials about Burma and about the event. You can make use of the materials at your event to educate your guests about the plight of Burmese people, and to raise awareness about Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma’s ongoing freedom struggles. We will also include simple actions that you and your guests can take, such as petitions to President Obama to support the recommendations for a UN-led Commission of Inquiry made by UN Special Rapporteur to Burma, Mr. Tomas Ojea Quintana. That way, you have fun while doing something meaningful and beneficial to Burma’s democracy movement.

Your Arrest Yourself event also serves as a small fundraiser for the U.S. Campaign for Burma. It is through your active support and contributions that we can carry out our advocacy efforts to free Aung San Suu Kyi and all the people of Burma from the brutal military dictatorship led by Than Shwe. All the donations we receive from this event will be used toward helping Aung San Suu Kyi and those putting their lives on the line as they fight for freedom, democracy, and human rights in Burma.

As an old Zulu maxim goes, “We are people through other people”, meaning our struggles are interconnected. Therefore, the plight of the Burmese people becomes our plight, and the fight for freedom in Burma becomes our fight. The history of Burma’s democracy movement is still in the making. Together, we can shape the way the history of Burma is written. We are ready. Are you?

Get on board and join us in this global action in honor of Aung San Suu Kyi and all the courageous freedom fighters from Burma. Sign up for an Arrest Yourself today!
