“Arrest Yourself” for Aung San Suu Kyi

Welcome to the June 13-15th, 2008

Global Days of Action for Aung San Suu Kyi!

Please join us and decide to host a party and  commit yourself to staying indoors for 24 hours from any time on June 13-15th , the weekend before her birthday, to demonstrate your solidarity with Aung San Suu Kyi, a noble woman who leads her people in a non-violent struggle for human rights and democracy. She has spent over 12 of the last 17 years under various forms of arrest, and is the only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize recipient in the world. Aung San Suu Kyi is passing her 63rd birthday under house arrest.

Sign up to host an event here!

Although we cannot know how she is passing her birthday as she remains alone in her home, in our own way we want to celebrate her birthday and also protest her unfair imprisonment, attacks on her and all democracy and human rights supporters party, the destruction of more than 3,200 villages, and the daily repression of social and political life in Burma.

Usually we ask people to “arrest themselves” - placing themselves under house arrest for 24 hours and during that time invite family and friends over and talk about Burma. We will provide you with supplies - video, info sheets etc.  If the house party idea doesn’t work for you, then feel free to get creative. The global action days will be for June 13-14th, but you can do it whenever in the month of June.

More than 500 individuals around the US and even more around the world staying their homes doesn’t make much noise or news. But 500+ house parties with purpose that generate thousands of letters to the US government and the United Nations for action on Burma, that create hundreds of messages of hope and support that will actually reach the eyes of struggling people inside Burma, that catch the attention of local and international media, and raise much-needed funds for a vital movement… this sort of unified voice can’t be stifled or silenced like the Burmese generals try to silence Aung San Suu Kyi and her supporters.

We are also asking that each event raise between $300 and $1,000 for the campaign to press for the freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma.  The best way to do this is to ask every single person who attends the party portion of your “arrest” to donate between $10 and $100. If you get 15 people to donate $20 each, you will easily reach $300. All donations are tax-deductible. Or you can get creative, and think of another way to do it.

Your event is only 1 of 500 going to happen around the world! We want to make Aung San Suu Kyi a global figure that the world knows.
