Urgent Action for 3500 Villages in Eastern Burma Wiped Off the Map

There are a number of ways that you can help the people of Eastern Burma who have been driven and burned out of their homes by the Burmese dictatorship.

1) Educate!

Most people are completely unaware of the tragic situation happening to Burma’s ethnic minorities. There are many things you can do to educate those around you

- Educate yourself

- Host a screening of the documentary “Shoot on Sight” (produced by Witnes and Burma Issues). Sign up to host an event.

- Hold a teach-in at your school, church, or even with a group of friends. Find at the bottom of this page a list of materials to help you.

Sign the petition to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.
If you are a student, set up a table on campus and ask your students, staff, and faculty to sign. If you are a professional, ask your family, friends, and colleagues to sign the postcards.

Give each person who signs the petition the information sheet about Eastern Burma that we have made available for download below so they can learn more. Also invite them to visit our website and become a member of the US Campaign for Burma.

2) Host a film screening and present a slideshow at your school or home.
Email our campaigns coordinator, Thelma Young (thelma@uscampaignforburma.org) to order and Action Pack which contains

A booklet on Burma’s history and human rights situation,
The DO-AYAY: OUR CAUSE documentary by the Freedom Campaign,
The SEASON OF FEAR documentary by Burma Issues/WITNESS, and
Flyers for our current campaigns

If you’d like to make a presentation to your friends or community instead of showing these films (or in addition to showing these films) download our PowerPoint presentation and the narrative that accompanies the presentation. If you cannot show the slideshow, you can just read the narrative that accompanies the presentation. Ask everyone you speak to sign the petition to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

3) Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. You can write your opinion about the situation in eastern Burma and send it to your local newspaper, student newspaper, or even a national newspaper.

Blog about Burma, too! One out of every four people who use the internet in the US reads blogs online – get your message out there every way you can.

We’ve compiled some facts about Eastern Burma that you will want to include in your letter and easy instructions on how to submit it to a paper.
